Open letter to Kohl’s about abortion support

18 Oct

This is a copy (without my full name and address) of an email I just sent to Kohl’s department store’s community relations department.

Dear Kohls community relations:

I shop at Kohl’s for my clothes, shoes, towels, and other things. I am a Kohl’s card holder. We frequent Kohl’s for myself, my wife, and my children.

I read today (here: http://www.lifenews.com/nat6623.html) that Kohls financially supports Planned Parenthood.

Like more Americans, according to Gallup, I believe that abortion is morally wrong.

Because Planned Parenthood is in the business of promoting and providing abortions (which according to science is taking the life of a human) I naturally have moral objections to my money being used to fund abortion.

Is it true that Kohls supports Planned Parenthood? What is the nature of this support? Does a portion of my every purchase go toward funding Planned Parenthood? Is it a matching program where Kohls matches contributions made by employees?

Please respond as soon as possible as I need some new jeans, but whether I shop at Kohls in the future depends on your response.

I am also posting this letter publicly online and will post your response as well.

Thank you for your time,

SecondJon

  • I just received this response from Kohl’s:

    Dear Mr. Green:

Your e-mail was forwarded to my attention in the Executive Office of Kohl’s for follow up and resolution. As it is my intent to provide our customers with quality service, I appreciate the opportunity to review your concerns.

Thank you for taking the time to contact Kohl’s directly. Kohl’s partnership with the Southeastern WI affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is aimed at increasing breast health screenings through a grassroots based education program; a marketing campaign designed to incite women to take action; financial assistance for those unable to pay for a mammogram and event sponsorship.

Our Community Relations department confirmed that Kohl’s does not have a corporate partnership with Planned Parenthood. We regret that you have received incorrect information.

I realize that your time is valuable and I appreciate the time you have taken to contact us. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me directly. It is my hope that you allow us another opportunity to provide you with the excellence in service you truly deserve.

    Best Regards,

    Ashley Carus
    Office of the President

can you post the response if they send one?

  • Jadon Sagehorn

so where did you hear about the planned parenthood contribution?

  • Craig

A huge PP supporter also happens to be Bill Gates and Microsoft – Gates dad was a board of director for PP

  • On another note – I found it interesting that Home Depot actually pays for employees who want a sex-change operation. I read about in the AFA’s magazine. They are also huge supporters at Gay Pride parades even providing activities for children at the demonstrations.

  • Samantha

The Komen foundation does give money to PP- at least according to Wikipedia (don’t laugh)

    • The Komen site very clearly states that their contributions to PP are only in areas where people are getting their mammograms from PP (rural, under- or uninsured … poorer locations, if you will), and the money only goes to breast cancer stuff and is monitored closely to ensure it’s not being used for anything else.

(I checked because I recently heard that they give money to PP and I was really disappointed to hear that. Was worth researching)

    • I’ll write more about this type of designating funding more later there’s too much to fit into a comment. 🙂

    • Michael

Komen’s claims that they only give funds to PP in areas where they provide mammograms is patently FALSE. PP does NOT provide mammograms in any of its facilities that received funds from Komen. All they do regarding breast cancer is refer women to other locations that provide mammograms. Komen’s founder was a huge lifetime supporter of abortion and sterilization and the organization has a definite pro-abortion agenda in donating to PP. They are not helping to cure cancer. Dr Stanislaw Burzynski is. Look him up.

  • Samantha

Have you ever wondered if the reason that abortion still is legal in this country is because Christians (us) have never really our our foot down. The evangelical “group” has tremendous voting (and I am assuming spending) power.

    • Samantha – What vote would have been better than the votes that have been cast?

  • Lori O.

Komen is a huge funder of PP, you are correct Samantha

  • Lori Engel

Samantha and Lori what is super disturbing about SGK giving money to PP is that having an abortion increases your risk of getting breast cancer. I wish I could boycott everyone who gives money to SGK, however, as the largest breast cancer awareness group it seems impossible. I am thinking of contacting SGK and asking why they don’t make people aware of the link between abortion and breast cancer, they don’t need to make a moral stance in my opinion but if they are raising awareness, they are failing if they do not give important stats.

Here’s the link being provided by Pro-Life Wisconsin:
    http://plannedparenthoodosbc.org/AR_06_07/MakingDiff/AR_Develp_B3.html.

Kohl’s is listed as a sponsor in the $500-999 level and donated items to support the services of Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties [PPOSBC].

I don’t know what information Life Decisions International used to put Kohl’s on the boycott list.

    • Thanks for the link Mary. The link is the Planned Parenthood offices in 2 California counties saying they received donations from Kohl’s.

I’m trying to figure out how the pieces fit together. It seems there’s likely 2 options:
      1. Kohl’s the company doesn’t donate to Planned Parenthood but some stores or regional groups of stores do.
      2. The letter I received is talking around the issues and they don’t have a formal relationship with Planned Parenthood but they do donate to them.

Anyone out there know what’s going on here?

    • Mary V.

I got a form letter from Colleen Terry, Office of the President, talking about Kohl’s partnership with the Southeastern affiliate of the Susan G. Komen foundation and all the positive things they do (they also donate to PP). I hadn’t said anything in my letters about Komen. I had provided the link to the CA PP site, though, but Terry did not respond to that. She said to call her if I had further questions. I’ve called twice and she has not returned my calls. So I think they are unwilling to respond to my concerns.

    • Hi Mary,

Thanks for the note. I too was curious about why when I asked about Planned Parenthood they wrote back that they give to Komen. I didn’t ask about Komen.

  • the above comments are ridiculous

    • @Desmond – your comment was automatically flagged as spam, but it’s quit possible you’re just lousy at arguing. What’s ridiculous is a post that has no depth at all, merely calls other people’s comments ridiculous. If you’d like to engage in the conversation, feel free.
